Married to Alice de Lacy. Father of Joan FitzPiers and Piers Herbert and Lucy FitzPiers and Lucy FitzPiers. Son of Herbert II FitzHerbert and Lucy de Pitres. Brother of Herbert FitzHerbert and William FitzHerbert and Godwin FitzHerbert and Matthew FitzHerbert.

Piers FitzHerbert, Lord of Berstaple
[michaelrneuman.ged], the honorof w hich he obtained from King John with fifteen knight's fees, partof the lands of William de Braose, and he was made Governor ofPickering Castle in Yorkshire, and Sheriff of that county b ythe samemonarch. This Peter was one of the barons named in Magna Carta and, byhis signature, fourth in rank amongst thebarons. He m. first, Alice,dau. of Robert Fitz Roger, a great baron in Northumberland, Lord ofWarkworth and Clavering, andsister of John, to whom Edward I gave thesurname of Clavering, lord of Callaly in Northumberland. By this ladyhe had a son andheir, Reginald Fitz Pete r. He m. secondly, Isabel,dau. and coheir of William de Braose, and widow of DavidLlewellin,Prince of Wales, and by the alliance acquired the lordshipsand castle of Blenlevenny and Talgarth in the county of Brecknock,withother possessions in Wales. He fortified his castle of Blenlevenny,and, dying in 1235, was s. by his son, Reginald FitzPeter, Lord ofBlenlevenn y, [John Burke, History of the Commoners of Great Britainand Ireland, Vo l. IV, R. Bentley,London, 1834, p. 728, Jones, ofLlanarth], wasreputed one of that prince's evil counsellors. In 1214, he wasconstituted governor of Pykering Castle, co. York, and sheriff of theshire; but afterwards falling off in his allegiance, his lands atAlcester were seized by the crown, and given to William de Camville.Returning, however, to his duty upon the accessionof Henry III, thoselands were restored to him. He m. 1st,Alice, dau. of Roger Fitz-Roger,a great baron in Northumberland, but by her had no issue; and 2ndly,the 3rd dau.and co-heir of William de Braose, Baron of Brecknock, andd.1235, leaving a son, Herbert Fitz-Peter. [Sir Bernard Burke,Dormant,Abeyant, Forfeited, and Extinct Peerages, Burke'sPeerag e, Ltd.,London, 1883, p. 206, Fitz-Herbert, BaronFitz-Herbert][213.ged]ing John1215[garynlewis1144.ged]a Charta,but was not one of the Sureties for its observance. He was at firstvery obsequ ious to King John and was reputed one of that Prince'sevil counsellor s. In 1214 he was constituted Governor of PykeringCastle, County York, a nd Sheriff of the Shire. Afterwards, fallingoff in his allegiance, his la nds at Alcester, which he had receivedthrough his grandmother, Juliana Corbet, were seized by the crown andgiven to William de Camville. Returning, however, to his duty uponaccession of Henry III, those lands were restored to him.
