ant of his grandfather's half of Orkney from King Magnus V Erlingsson, and then went to King William the Lion and received a grant of the half of Caithness which had belonged to his grandfather. This he occupied, apparently content for the time being not to claim his half of Orkney from Jarl Harald Maddadsson. Later he secured recognition and a regrant of half of Orkney from King Sverri, and on the strength of this called upon Jarl Harald Maddadsson in 1598 to surrender Jarl Kali-Ragnvald's half of Orkney to him. On receiving a refusal he attacked Jarl Harald Maddadsson, supported by his brother Elin, his brother-in-law and chief counsellor Hilfolf Skalli, and his kinsman Sigurd Murt, and was killed with all of them in the battle of Wick, 1198.
