[Complete Peerage I:145, XIV:25]t Mormaers of the district, but of this there is no proof. Martin of Clermont is claimed as authority for the statement that this Earl's father was Gilchrist, also Earl of Angus, who is said to have fought at the battle of the Standard in 1138. But in Aildred's account of that conflict there is no mention of such an Ear., and hs does not appear in authentic record. Gilbert, Earl of Angus, however, appears frequently in charters and other public documents from about the year 1150 to 1187. The first notice of him is as 'Ghillebrite' Earl of Angus, a witness to a charter by King David I., apparently towards the close of his reign, or 1150-1153, to the monks of Deer. He is frequently named in charters to various religious houses, granted by King Malcolm IV and King William the Lion. Earl Gilbert also took an active part in public affairs, and was one of the leaders of the Scottish army in the wars of King William the Lion with England. He was present at the sack of Warkworth in 1174. Soon after this, as is well known, the King fell into the hands of the English, and only regained his liberty at the expense of sacrificing for a time the independence of Scotland, by a treaty made at Falaise., so far as can be definitely ascertained, is in a charter by William the Lion to Richard, Bishop of Moray, who was elected in 1187, and also in a charter by the Bishop. He apparently did not long survive that date." [Scots Peerage I:160-161]
