CokayneÕs Complete Peerage in Dave's Database.f his father's lands. About January 1155/6 he was created EARL OF ESSEX. He was at the Council of Clarendon in January 1163/4. In 1166 he returned that he had 97 1/3 knights' fees of the old fieffment and 15 5/6 of the new: and he owed the King the service of 60 knights. He was a Justice-in-Eyre for the eastern counties in 1166. He married, in or before 1158, Eustache, probably bastard daughter of Eustace IV, Count of Boulogne [died 1153]. As he refused to live with her, the King caused them to be divorced. He died s.p., at Chester, 21 October 1166, and was buried in Walden Abbey. [CP 5:116-7, 14:309]
