Al-Hussein Ali

Al-Hussein Ibn Ali, Male 624 - 680

Died, The Battle Of Karbala.

Married to (Unknown) Sharbanu. Father of Ali Iraq. Son of Ali Abu-Talib and Fatima Mohammed. Brother of Al-Hassan (Unknown).

Following the death of Mu’awiyah, the Umayyad governor of D
amascus, his son Yazid became caliph without holding the us
ual consultations. No caliph had been so succeeded by his s
on before and with Yazid’s reputation as a reveler, subsequ
ent dissension arose as to who best suited the Caliphate. T
hroughout many cities, notables refused to swear allegianc
e to Yazid, among them was Al-Hussein the Prophet’s grandso
n. Many believed that only the Family of the Prophet coul
d overcome the powerful Mu’awiyah clan, and Al-Hussein, who
’s older brother Al-Hassan had died ten years earlier, wa
s ready to take up the cause. At the invitation of the Shi’
ite Kufans he left al-Medina al-Munawwara and traveled acro
ss the desert with an army of 600 to Kufa (in Iraq) to see
k more supporters. However, and under the orders of Yazid
, the governor of Iraq with 4000 soldiers intercepted Al-Hu
ssein and his troops. Besieged and with their water suppl
y cut-off for eight days, Al-Hussein and his small army wen
t into the ill-fated battle at Karbala, resulting in his de
ath.
