m Donald, Earl of Lennox, a charter of the lands of Sallochy, with confirmation of the upper part of the carrucate of Buchanan. Sir Maurice also obtained a charter of confirmation of the lands of Buchanan from King David II in the beginning of his reign.e Buchanan, who had a charter of confirmation of some of his lands of Buchanan from Robert the Second, in which he is designed the king's 'consanguineus', or cousin. His eldest son, John, married Janet, daughter and sole heiress of John Buchanan of Leny, fourth in descent from Allan already noticed. John, who died before his father, had three sons, viz, Sir Alexander, Walter, and John, who inherited the lands of Leny, and carried on that family."h William Wallace, who was killed by King Edward I of England. He was also contemporary with Robert the Bruce, the leader of the Scots against the armies of Kings Edward I and II of England. Robert the Bruce defeated King Edward II and reigned as Robert I, King of Scotland, from 1306 to 1329 A.D."ing Robert Bruce, after his defeat at Dalree, near Straithfillan, by Macdougall, lord of Lorn, and his adherents, came all alone, on foot, along the north side of Loch Lomond (being the most rugged way of any other of this kingdom), the day after that battle, to the castle of Buchanan; where, being joyfully received, and for some days entertained, he was secretly conveyed, by the earl of Lennox and Buchanan, to a place of safety. This report is the more probable, in regard there is a cave near the shore of Loch Lomond, in Buchanan parish, termed the King's Cave ; it being reported, that king Robert lay over night in that cave, in his journey towards Buchanan.' He married a daughter of Sir Walter Menteith of Rusky and had a son, Sir Walter Buchanan, who, according to Auchmar, 'seems to have been a very active ' gentleman, and made a very bright figure in his 'time, having made a very considerable addition' to his old estate by the purchase of a great 'many other lands.'"
