Born, Sutton-in-Holderness, West Riding, Yorkshire.
Son of John Sutton and Constance Sampson. Brother of Thomas Sutton and Margaret Sutton.

ed Johanni de Sutton de Holdernesse from 15 November 1338 to 20 April 134
4. In 1340, and continuously until 1354, he was in commissions. In Janua
ry 1341/2 he was going to Scotland. On 18 May 1343 he had a grant to him a
nd his heirs of free warren in manors in Yorks and Lincs. On 10 February 1
345/6 he was granted, as John de Sutton of Holdernesse, chivaler, a licen
ce for the alienation in mortmain of the advowson of the chapel of St. Jam
es, Sutton in Holderness, held in chief as of the Honour of Aumale, to 6 c
haplains, to celebrate divine service daily for the good estate of the Ki
ng and Queen, the grantor and Aline his wife and their souls when they di
e, and the souls of the father and mother of the grantor. On 4 February 13
51/2 he had licence to build a castle at Bransholme and crenellate i
t. On 5 April 1356 he had licence to alienate in mortmain to the ward
en of the chapel of Sutton in Holderness land in Sutton.
p. 5 May 1356, without heir of his body. His widow died 5 October 1363. [
