Married to Jane English. Father of Lewis Swab and Ida Swab and Nicholas Swab and Flora Swab and Eva Swab and Ada Swab and Alvah Swab. Son of (Unknown) Name and Lewis Schwab.
It was the practice during the American Civil War that a draftee into the Union Army could avoid military service by hiring a man to take his place. A friend of Nicholas Swab hired Nicholas as his substitute. Nicholas enlisted in Compnay B, 9th Minnesota Regiment, February 22, 1864. Less that four months later, Nicolas was killed at the Battle of Guntown, Mississippi, June 10, 1864. Nicholas died leaving a wife, six children and one unborn child.
