Father of John Erskine and Mary Erskine. Son of John Erskine and Margaret Campbell. Brother of Janet Erskine and Elizabeth Erskine and Thomas Erskine and Katherine Erskine.

1st Earl of Mar
"He held the office of Regent of Scotland. He was Commendator of Inchmaholme in 1548. He succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Erskine [S., 1438] between July 1555 and November 1555. He succeeded to the title of 18th Earl of Mar [S., c. 1115] from 11 July 1555 to November 1555. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1561. He was Abbot of Dryburgh. He was created 1st Earl of Mar [Scotland] on 23 June 1565... On 23 June 1565 he was restored by charter to the Earldom of Mar. He held the office of Keeper of Stirling Castle. In 1567 he helped to incarcerate Mary, Queen of Scots in Lochleven Castle. He held the office of Keeper of Edinburgh Castle before March 1566/67. He held the office of Regent of Scotland in 1571."
