Brother of Lewis Brinkerhoff and Margaret Brinkerhoff and Sarah Brinkerhoff and James Brinkerhoff and Hannah Brinkerhoff and Josiah Brinkerhoff.
Attended academy at Prattsburg, Steuben, New York and entered lawoffice of Howard and Brother in Bath in 1834. Moved to Mansfield,Ohio May 1837 and was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of theState. Elected Prosecuting Attorney for Richland County. Elected toCongress in 1843 as a Democrat. Became acquainted wth Free Soil Partyand drew up Wilmot Proviso (on file in Library of Congress inhishandwriting). Elected to Supreme Bench of Ohio January 9, 1856 andserved for 15 years. Member of Congressional Church of Mansfield.
